Other major rivers are: Douro, Minho and Guadiana. The highest point of Portugal is on the island: Mount Pico (2351 m) in the Azores.

Portugal is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean in the west and south, and Spain in the north and east.

The climate is considered to be oceanic in the north and Mediterranean in the south. Portugal is one of the hottest countries in Europe, topping the average annual temperature around 13 degrees Celsius in the north and 18 degrees in the south. Atlantic archipelagos of Madeira and Azores have a lower average temperature. In general, spring and summer is sunny, whereas autumn and winter is rainy and windy.

History of Portugal

The territory of today's Portugal has been occupied since the prehistoric times, and also belonged under the Roman Empire as its neighbor, Spain. Then it fell under the rule of Muslims, and only after the Reconquista a County of Portugal was settled, later to be recognized as an independent kingdom in the 13th century. The maritime success and colonies which Portugal gained in the 15th and 16th century made it one of the most powerful global powers at the time. However, after a succession crisis and several invasions by France and Spain, Portugal lost its position as a global player, and the crisis overseas and colonies gaining independence caused the decline of the Kingdom. After a period of dictatorship in the 20th century Portugal became a republic. Now it is one of the most developed countries in the world and a member of many international organizations as European Union, United Nations and many more. The economy hasn't been progressing much lately, and the car plant owned by Volkswagen is by far the most important investment from abroad.
